OCEAN EXPLORATION TRUST, NAUTILUS LIVE
Can you see the hiding squid?
This creature may look like a squishy toy with googly eyes. But it’s a real ocean animal. It’s called the stubby squid.
Scientists were excited to take a photo of it. Why? These little animals are great at hiding. It is unusual to see them. They are pretty sneaky!
Here’s how they hide. They squirt water out of jets on their bodies. That helps them dig holes in the sand. They go into the holes.
Then the squid cover their bodies in sticky slime. Sand sticks to the slime. Now they look just like the sandy ocean floor!
Why do they hide? It helps them get food. The squid poke their big eyes out of the sand. When they see a shrimp, they pop out of their hiding spot to catch it. Then they eat it up.
