Where Is the Gingerbread Man?

Types of poetry

• Small group; whole group; independent reading

  These paired texts will teach students about two delicious winter treats. 

(10 minutes)

• We are offering a special online resource for this poem! It’s an online read-aloud of the classic Gingerbread Man story. Listen to it before reading. 

Reading fluency (20 minutes)

• You can read the poem to the class first to model fluency and familiarize students with the language. 
• You can also click the Read-Aloud button at the top of the digital issue to hear it read aloud by a professional voice actor.
• Now that the poem has been modeled for the students, you can read it aloud together as a class or have students read it to each other in pairs. 

Use visuals (5 minutes)

• Point out how the illustrations around the poem match different parts of the text. Ask students to find the various characters mentioned­—including, of course, the Gingerbread Man!

• Who Is Running?: Students can do a “color by sound” activity to reveal a picture of the Gingerbread Man. (15 minutes)
• Lost Gingerbread People!: In this whole-class activity, students will decorate and describe gingerbread people, and then play a game with them. This skills page includes step-by-step instructions for teachers. (45 minutes)
